AEE, AVN awards hit Las Vegas next week

There’s something missing from this year’s CES: porn stars.

While TVs and tablets dominate the world’s largest tech confab, CES attendees often save some attention for the nearby Adult Entertainment Expo. This year, though, the two shows don’t coincide and it’s like the loss of a familiar, if slightly sketchy, cousin at a family dinner.

The AEE (and its accompanying AVN awards) won’t hit Las Vegas until next week. This year is the first time in years the two shows haven’t synced up.

The porn convention was actually born out of CES. In the early days of the electronics show, there was an adult video section. Thirteen years ago, however, the adult entertainment companies decided to strike out on their own. The show has run the same week as CES for several years, fitting since porn has driven several home entertainment technologies.

Cross traffic between the two events was heavy as well, but this year CES shifted its show dates, closing it out on a Friday (last year’s show ran Thursday through Sunday). And that’s being pointed to as a reason for the change.

Economics are a larger factor, though. This year’s porn show will be held at the Hard Rock Casino, which will cost organizers much less than the Sands Convention Center — and non-CES fans will be able to get rooms for a significantly cheaper rate than during CES, when Vegas hotels ratchet up prices to often outrageous levels.

AEE show officials admit they’re concerned about a potential loss of foot traffic, but say media coverage requests have more than doubled for the event, which should guarantee plenty of, um, exposure.

The 2011 AEE saw just shy of 23,000 fans attend, compared to the nearly 150,000 that came to CES.

Of course, CES hasn’t been entirely porn-free.

Tech-intense adult company Pink Visual hosted a party Tuesday for about 100 CES showgoers, bringing a trio of stars to pose for pictures and mingle with the techies, including one who spend the evening wearing an iPad strapped to her chest, encouraging people to swipe the screen to display cleavage (presumably, hers) in a variety of lingerie styles.
