iPhone, iTouch can now stream full episodes

ABC is expanding the footprint of a free app that plays full episodes of its primetime programming from iPad to iPhone and iTouch as well, the network announced Tuesday.

The ABC Player App has also been revamped to take advantage of the latest iPad’s full retina display. Disney/ABC Television Group first released the app strictly for iPad nearly two years, and has been downloaded over 4 million times since launching just five weeks after the tablet first hit the market. That’s enough to make it the sixth most downloaded free app ever.

In addition, ABC Player App will boast new features across platforms including closed-captioning and a “save and recall” functionality that allows for picking up where playback of a program left off across iOs-powered devices.

“We are thrilled with the ongoing performance of the ABC Player App and the fact that consumers and advertisers have enthusiastically continued to embrace our initial app offering,” said Albert Cheng, executive VP and chief product officer of digital media, Disney/ABC Television Group.

ABC first began streaming episodes of its primetime programming online six years ago.
