Ferreras’ ‘Wrinkles’ to get U.S. release

GKids picks up Spanish toon

New York-based GKids, a U.S. speciality distributor of independent and foreign animation films, has closed U.S. rights on Spaniard Ignacio Ferreras’ 2D toon “Wrinkles.”

6 Sales has also sold Canada (AZFilms), Russia and the former CIS (Ruscico), Latin America (HBO), China (HGC), and Poland (Adyton).

“Wrinkles” typifies GKids’ highly selective line in upscale, artistic, very often-2D toon pics, which attract accolades from fests and specialist toon meets.

“Wrinkles” turns on the growing friendship of two seniors at a nursing home. It is produced by two of Spain’s foremost toon production forces, Perro Verde, which co-produced “The Missing Link” with Antonio Banderas, and Cromosoma, which unveiled “The Triplets and the Machine That Runs the World” at March’s Cartoon Movie meet.

Shortlisted for 2012’s Academy Awards, “Wrinkles” won two Spanish Academy Award Goyas and the audience award at Belgium’s Anima 2012 fest, and helped Perro Verde win European Producer of the Year at March’s 15th Cartoon Movie meet. It will compete at the upcoming Annecy and Karlovy Vary fests.

Other GKids U.S. pickups include Oscar-nominated animated features “Chico & Rita” and “A Cat in Paris.”
