Xbox Music unveiled

Microsoft makes announcement at E3

Among the plethora of initiatives that aim to make the Xbox console a center of home entertainment, Microsoft unveiled its new Xbox Music service at E3 on Monday.

Announcement was short on details, and speculation over Microsoft’s moves in the music realm has been ongoing since the company quietly began to phase out its Zune music platform, which will presumably now be officially replaced by Xbox Music.

Specifics on the platform — from release date to cost, functions and availability on non-Microsoft devices — were not revealed Monday, though Microsoft Interactive Entertainment CMO Yusef Medhi noted that the service will include 30 million tracks, and a promo tubthumped sharing and discovery functions and displayed an interface largely similar to that of Zune.

The service will eventually be accessible on Xbox consoles, Windows phones and Windows 8-based devices.
