Dealmakers Impact Report 2012: Legal Eagles

Attorney Deutsch worked for client DreamWorks Animation over the summer on its $155 million acquisition of character house Classic Media and multi-picture output distribution deal with Fox, and also MGM in lining up a $500 million revolving credit facility in February. Acquisitions involving film/TV libraries such as Classic Media are labor-intensive because “we dig deep into the library to vet the ownership rights to the properties,” Deutsch says. “It requires an extensive review of rights documents, which can be quite complicated as rights change hands over the years.” Other transactions involved client Cross Creek Pictures (“Black Swan”) concluding a distribution deal with Universal Pictures in September, client Univision’s joint venture with ABC News to launch a TV news channel for bilingual Hispanics, and Canada’s Alliance Films on financing and distribution for multiple movies. “We have to keep up to speed on changing distribution methods and exploitation windows to determine how they impact our clients and our deals,” he says.
