Regis Philbin’s Sappy, Classy Farewell to ‘Live’

Philbin_bltvOK, it was predictable that Regis Philbin’s farewell episode of “Live With Regis and Kelly” would be a three-hankie affair.

Disney CEO Robert Iger showed up. So did New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. So did the cast of “Rent,” in (sorry Bob) a genuine highlight — amending one of the musical’s signature songs to reflect Philbin’s 28-year stint hosting the morning staple. (Think minutes — a whole lot of minutes.)

The hour was unabashedly sappy, and so filled with commercials the company appeared to be trying to raise a war chest to hire the next co-host.

Still, as I stated in an appreciation of the host, Philbin is a true broadcaster, and for all the hype, his final sign-off — speaking directly to the camera, thanking everyone, saying we’ll meet again — was simple, elegant and surprisingly no-frills.

Good luck finding a replacement. These guys don’t come along very often.
