'Idol' tops in demos, 'Dancing' in total viewers
With CBS’ “NCIS” wrapping its season last week, the final Tuesday of the season was all about the music, as Fox scored with “American Idol” and “Glee,” ABC with the “Dancing With the Stars” finale and NBC with “The Voice.”
Fox prevailed in key demos while ABC won in total viewers. And even on such a strong night for the broadcasters, TNT figured to log one of the top 18-49 scores with its overtime NBA playoff game between Miami and Chicago.
According to preliminary nationals from Nielsen, the final performance episode of “American Idol” –airing on a special night — averaged a potent 6.2 rating/18 share in adults 18-49 and 20 million viewers overall in the 8 o’clock hour, down a bit in the demo vs. its comparable hourlong performance finale of a year ago; the show wraps its 10th season tonight. It was followed by the season finale of “Glee” (4.6/11 in 18-49, 12.1 million viewers overall), airing an hour later than usual; the musical series won its hour in 18-49, rising nearly 30% from its regular-slot performance of a week ago.
At ABC, following a repeat of the previous night’s “Dancing With the Stars” (2.0/6 in 18-49, 10.3 million viewers overall), the two-hour spring finale averaged a winning 4.5/11 in 18-49 and 21.0 million viewers overall from 9 to 11. The finale was up about 15% from last year’s conclusion, capping the show’s most-watched season to date.
NBC’s two-hour finale of “The Biggest Loser” (3.1/8 in 18-49, 8.1 million viewers overall) held up well considering the tough competition it faced, logging the show’s best demo score since Feb. 1. It was followed by music contest “The Voice” (3.8/9 in 18-49, 8.5 million viewers overall), which was down vs. its prior four-week average but still looked good; it pulled ahead of the final hour of ABC’s “Dancing” in adults 18-34.
CBS aired repeats of “NCIS” (1.8/5 in 18-49, 10.2 million viewers overall) and “NCIS: Los Angeles” (1.7/4 in 18-49, 9.3 million viewers overall), followed by a special 10 p.m. encore of “NCIS” (1.7/4 in 18-49, 8.4 million viewers overall).
Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: Fox, 5.4/15; ABC, 3.7/10; NBC, 3.3/9; CBS, 1.7/4; Univision, 1.6/4; CW, 0.2/1.
In total viewers: ABC, 17.4 million; Fox, 16.0 million; CBS, 9.3 million; NBC, 8.2 million; Univision, 3.8 million; CW, 0.7 million.
