German pay net bolsters slate with shows
German pay TV channel TNT Serie continues to bolster its lineup with hot HBO content, adding the Kate Winslet miniseries “Mildred Pierce” to a growing roster of acquisitions that include epic fantasy drama “Game of Thrones” and Steven Spielberg’s alien invasion skein “Falling Skies.”
TNT Serie will broadcast “Mildred Pierce” and “Thrones,” which stars Sean Bean, this winter.
Set in 1930s Los Angeles and revolving around a housewife struggling to maintain her family’s social position during the Great Depression, “Mildred Pierce” preemed to 1.3 million viewers last month on HBO.
“Game of Thrones,” David Benioff and Dan Weiss’ adaptation of R.R. Martin’s book series chronicling political intrigue and war in a world threatened by dragons and ice zombies, debuts on HBO on Sunday.
The fantasy series was one of HBO’s biggest sellers at last week’s Mip TV programming mart in Cannes, triggering bidding wars among European webs.
The series are the latest HBO acquisitions for fellow Time Warner subsid TNT Serie. The Munich-based channel began airing the cabler’s Prohibition-era series “Boardwalk Empire” just days after its stellar debut on the U.S. cabler in February.
TNT Serie is one of five channels operated by TBS in Germany.
