Cabler now has three Tyler Perry sitcoms

TBS is ramping up its Tyler Perry slate with “For Better or Worse.”

New series is based on the 2007 theatrical release “Why Did I Get Married?” and will be distributed by Debmar Mercury, which also handles the cabler’s Perry skeins “House of Payne” and “Meet the Browns.”

Production on 10 episodes is set to begin this summer in Perry’s Atlanta-based studio. Series will star Michael Jai White and Tasha Smith as a married couple and the challenges they face.

Like the other Perry series, if the show launches successfully, the episode order will skyrocket to 100.

“Tyler Perry’s series have been tremendously successful for TBS, helping establish the network as a prime destination for African-American viewers,” said TBS programming topper Michael Wright. “Given such a remarkable track record, we’re excited for the opportunity to expand our relationship with Tyler Perry and Debmar Mercury.”

Perry’s programming has been a boon for TBS. The June 2007 premiere of “House of Payne” drew 5.9 million viewers, at the time basic cable’s biggest sitcom aud.
