Evening raises $600,000 for mentoring org
Comedian Steve Harvey and Ford Motor CEO Alan Mulally had quite the embrace on stage during the Helping Hand awards presentation Monday night.“He just kissed me,” said Harvey, after presenting the kudo award to Mulally. “Excuse me while I gather myself.” Joined by his wife, Marjorie, and their children, Harvey co-hosted the second annual Steve Harvey Foundation Gala at Cipriani Wall Street with Sherri Shepherd. The night’s other honorees included Tyler Perry and Chris and Malaak Rock. Rock, who rushed to the gala after a preview performance of his Broadway play, got in a poke at Harvey’s radio show. “You know what’s real funny about Steve? There’s no Jay-Z,” Rock said about the comedian’s radio show. “You gotta really try not to play some Jay-Z … how the hell can you have a black station for three hours and not play some Jay-Z? You must have beef.”The intimate dinner crowd for the foundation gala, which raised $600,000 for its programs that include mentoring boys to become productive men, included Russell Simmons, producer L.A. Reid, Cynthia Bailey, Gayle King and Denzel Washington’s wife, Pauletta.
