Starz plans Spanish-lingo Encore channel

Cabler overhauls Encore brand with name changes, more HD outlets

Starz Entertainment is adding a Spanish-lingo version of its Encore movie channel. The Liberty Media-owned group is also changing the names of several of Encore’s themed channels as of Aug. 1.

Plans for the launch of Encore Espanol comes at a time when mainstream media outlets are paying more attention to the growing Hispanic marketplace. Encore Espanol will carry the same pics as the Encore channel.

Encore’s family and kidvid channel Encore Wam will be renamed Encore Family. Encore Mystery will become Encore Suspense. The existing Encore Action and Encore Drama outlets will also be made available in HD.

Finally, the Movieplex channel that had carried a daily rotation of Encore channels will be programmed as its own discreet movie channel.

“With these enhancements to the lineup, we see a great opportunity to make (Encore channels) them even more popular,” said Stephan Shelanski, executive vice president of programming for Starz Entertainment.
