Spike orders reality series about miners

'Coal' to debut in March

Spike is digging into “Coal,” a new reality series from Thom Beers.

Cabler has ordered 10 episodes of the hourlong skein that will begin in March. Beers’ Original Prods. will serve as producer.

Show will focus on the Cobalt Mine in West Virginia, its co-owners Mike Crowder and Tom Roberts, and the families and close-knit community that spend much of their time involved in activities centered around the mine.

Beers, who will exec produce with Philip D. Segal, has a full slate of cable shows on his resume, including “Deadliest Catch,” “Ice Road Truckers” and “Ax Men.” He’s worked with Spike before on “1,000 Ways to Die” and pilot “Weapon X,” which never made it to air.

Spike saw an 18% drop in the 18-49 demo and a decrease in total viewers in 2010.
