Specials spur CBS Tuesday victory

'Rudolph,' 'Victoria's Secret' dominate their timeslots

The unlikely combo of ”Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and ”Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show” lifted CBS to a convincing victory in key demos on Tuesday, a night that also saw NBC’s ”Biggest Loser” and ”Parenthood” match season highs.

According to preliminary national estimates from Nielsen, ”Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” averaged a 4.0 rating/11 share in adults 18-49 and 12.7 million viewers overall in the 8 o’clock hour, rising a bit year to year. And following a special ”NCIS” repeat at 9 (2.9/7 in 18-49, 13.4 million viewers overall), the ”Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show” (4.6/11 in 18-49, 10.3 million viewers overall) drew its largest demo scores to date, surging 35% vs. last year and winning the 10 p.m. hour by 6 shares in 18-49 over both ABC and NBC.

Fox was on the upswing with its comedies ”Glee” (3.2/8 in 18-49, 7.8 million viewers overall), ”New Girl” (3.6/9 in 18-49, 7.6 million viewers overall) and ”Raising Hope” (2.4/6 in 18-49, 5.3 million viewers overall). ”Glee” led its 8 o’clock hour in persons 12-34 (3.1/9), while ”New Girl” was the night’s top regular series in adults 18-49.

NBC saw both ”The Biggest Loser” (2.4/6 in 18-49, 7.1 million viewers overall) and ”Parenthood” (2.2/5 in 18-49, 5.7 million viewers overall) match their season highs in 18-49, rising more than 15% from last week when they faced the ”Dancing With the Stars” finale on ABC. ”Parenthood” also picked up some older viewers in the absence of competition from CBS crime drama ”Unforgettable,” and logged its largest overall audience since its season premiere on Sept. 13.

ABC opened with ”Last Man Standing” (2.4/7 in 18-49, 10.2 million viewers overall) and ”Man Up” (1.7/4 in 18-49, 6.6 million viewers overall), both of which were down week to week. And following a special hourlong repeat of the season premiere of Wednesday comedy ”The Middle” (1.4/3 in 18-49, 4.7 million viewers overall), crime drama ”Body of Proof” averaged a 1.8/5 in 18-49 and 9.4 million viewers overall.

At CW, ”90210” (0.8/2 in 18-49, 1.6 million viewers overall) was up across the board vs. its performance of recent weeks, but ”Ringer” (0.6/1 in 18-49, 1.6 million viewers overall) continues to post modest demo numbers.

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: CBS, 3.8/10; Fox, 3.1/8; NBC, 2.3/6; ABC, 1.7/4; Univision, 1.5/4; CW, 0.7/2.

In total viewers: CBS, 12.1 million; ABC, 7.5 million; Fox, 7.2 million; Univision, 3.5 million; CW, 1.6 million.
