DirecTV exec to lead Time Warner's launch of twin channels in '12

Time Warner Cable has chosen Mark Shuken as senior VP and general manager of its English- and Spanish-language networks dedicated to the Los Angeles Lakers, set for launch in the second half of 2012.

Shuken previously served as president and CEO of DirecTV Sports Networks, which owns Root Sports, a group of former Fox Sports Net affiliates in Pittsburgh, the Pacific Northwest and the Rocky Mountains region that were rebranded April 1. Shuken had been prexy and CEO of Liberty Sports Group, which merged with DirecTV in 2009.

Past jobs for Shuken include senior veep and g.m. of Fox Sports Net Northwest and prexy/COO of Rival Networks.

TWC announced in February that it had acquired the rights to distribute local broadcasts of Lakers games for 20 years beginning with the 2012-13 season, ending the bellwether NBA franchise’s longtime run in Los Angeles on KCAL Channel 9 and Fox Sports Net. The new twin channels will be made available to all satellite, cable and telco distributors in the Lakers’ territory, which includes all of Southern California, Nevada and Hawaii.

The news of Shuken’s hire was first reported by Sports Business Daily.
