NBC is taking a gamble on Roseanne Barr’s return to primetime comedy, giving a script plus penalty order to a Barr-fronted laffer from 20th Century Fox TV.
“Downwardly Mobile” is described as a multicam ensembler set among friends and family members who live in a mobile home community. Barr co-created and exec produces the show with John Argent, who is Barr’s b.f., and Eric Gilliland, a sitcom vet and an alum of Barr’s “Roseanne,” which ran from 1988-97 on ABC. Steven Greener is also an exec producer.
After staying mostly out of the public eye in recent years, Barr raised her TV profile this past summer when she and Argent starred in the Lifetime reality skein “Roseanne’s Nuts,” which focused on the nut farm the duo run in Hawaii. The show didn’t do much business for Lifetime and was not renewed for a second season. (Greener was also an exec producer on “Roseanne’s Nuts.”)
“Mobile” joins the list of high-profile comedy bets NBC is making for the coming pilot season, including projects toplined by Sarah Silverman, Sean Hayes, Portia de Rossi and Snoop Dogg.
