Rangers, Flyers face off in Winter Classic

HBO's '24/7' docuseries aims to lure fans to hockey

Longtime rivals the New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers will partake in this winter’s NHL Winter Classic.

Game, to be played Jan. 2 from Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, will be telecast once again by NBC. Event is an integral part of the Peacock’s newly pacted 10-year deal with the league and has become one of the signature moments for the NHL in its attempt to draw national publicity beyond those already interested in hockey.

Prior to the game, HBO will air a four-episode docuseries at 10 p.m. Wednesdays that will chronicle both teams and help build fan interest. The first of the four telecasts will air Dec. 14.

The 2011 Winter Classic between the Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins drew 4.5 million viewers, making it the most-watched regular season game in the U.S. in 36 years.
