Discovery Communications is set to bring in former NBCUniversal digital exec Jean-Briac Perrette to head up its own digital businesses, a source close to the situation confirms. The news was first reported by the Wall Street Journal.
Perrette was one of several execs to ankle NBCU after the company’s merger with Comcast. While he was at that company, his focus was digital distribution platforms including gaming systems and online retailers under TV group prexy Jeff Gaspin (who left the NBCU during the earlier part of the Comcast reshuffle). Perrette also led NBCU during the formation of Hulu.
In the new position, Perrette will report to David Zaslav – also an NBCU cable-side vet.
Perrette’s CV clearly sits well with Discovery: the cable conglom is already an enthusiastic streaming-side partner with distrib Netflix and sells its programs through Amazon Video and Apple. Last month Discovery expanded its contract with Netflix to include more prior-season programming and renewed its nonexclusive agreement with the company for a further two years.
