The “Modern Family” troupe awoke Thursday to an embarrassment of riches as the ABC/20th Century Fox TV skein (Emmy’s reigning comedy series champ) logged the most noms of any scripted comedy. The big win, according to co-creator Steve Levitan, was the supporting actor bid for Ed O’Neill, who was surprisingly overlooked last year.
“Our entire adult cast got nominated. That’s an amazing thing,” said Levitan, who was quick to give a shout-out to the show’s younger thesps. “For today the kids are the unsung heroes of the show. They really do bring so much to the show — it wouldn’t be the same without them.”
Will the competition among the six nommed thesp lead to any stress on the set? If last year is any guide, absolutely not, Levitan said.”This is an A-plus, home run for us. The actors all really root for each other. They truly consider themselves an ensemble as evidenced by the fact that they all entered in the supporting category. That’s a testament to their love and respect and appreciation for each other.”
Despite the shower of noms, a big cast and crew celebration will have to wait. Many of the actors are out of town, prior to the Aug. 1 start of filming on season three. The writers will take a minute for a hurrah in the “Modern Family” offices today “but then we’ll get back to the business of breaking stories,” Levitan said.
