Patty Jenkins, a drama series directing nominee for the pilot of “The Killing,” worked hard on crafting the look and feel of the world inhabited by the characters in the murder mystery.
They sought deep, colors and a soft look to the film to stand in sharp contrast to the hard-edge of the brutality of the murder and the anguish faced by the family.
“With Veena (Sud) and everyone on the crew we wanted to go for the opposite of what you expect for the genre,” she said. “We were interested in seeing the landscape that is lush and beautiful but also holds the darkness of the story you’re seeing.”
Because of skedding issues, Jenkins was unable to helm another seg beyond the pilot but she hopes to return for season two of “Killing.” As for the strong reaction by fans to cliffhanger season finale, Jenkins said it was a sign of strength on the part of Sud and her writing team.
“You can’t write the show for your fans or else it would bore them,” she said, “because they would know what was coming.”
