While Idris Elba may still be known to most American viewers as “The Wire” drug kingpin Stringer Bell, John Luther is making strides as well into the U.S. consciousness.

Elba called the BBC America series “refreshing TV, and said Det. Luther’s journey was more of a “how to catch ‘em” rather than a typical whodunnit.”

He credited creator Neil Cross for writing a show that was “refreshing but dark” and for penning a character who had to battle many personal demons, all the while making sure he could perform his day job without allowing his volatile emotions to get in the way.

And as for the mythical showdown between Stringer and Luther, “If Stringer and Luther get in a fight, Luther would win. But I don’t think Luther would ever be able to (arrest) Stringer.”

Elba was also nommed for a guest starring spot in “The Big C.”
