Japanese net reups for 'Poirot,' 'Marple'

Japanese pubcaster NHK has acquired new Agatha Christie series from ITV Studios Global Entertainment, the international distribution arm of U.K. web ITV.

The 12th series of “Agatha Christie’s Poirot” and the fourth and fifth series of “Agatha Christie’s Marple,” will air on NHK BS-Premium, NHK’s hi-def service, in 2012, ITV Studios announced Monday. The former includes four episodes and the latter two eight episodes.

“Both ‘Poirot’ and ‘Marple’ have performed very well for NHK over the years, achieving strong ratings and critical acclaim,” said ITV Studios senior VP Augustus Dulgaro in a statement. “We are delighted to see these two legendary crime sleuths returning to entertain Japanese audiences with new murder mysteries in 2012.”

ITV1 and ITV Studios are gearing up to make three more Miss Marple pics, about an elderly spinster who is also an accomplished amateur detective, as well as film the remaining novels about Belgian private eye Hercule Poirot in 2012.
