NBC orders three more dramas

Series nods go to 'Playboy,' 'Awake' and 'Grimm'

NBC has given the official nod to drama pilots “Playboy,” “Awake” and “Grimm.”

“The Playboy Club” and “Awake,” both from 20th Century Fox TV, had been expected. “Grimm,” from Universal Media Studios, was a dark horse that gained steam in the past few days.

Also expected in the very near future is a nod for the Warner Bros. TV laffer inspired by Chelsea Handler’s book “Are You There, Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea.”

Another Peacock comedy that has come on strong at the 11th hour is the untitled project from young scribe-thesps Lennon Parham and Jessica St. Clair. The low-budget presentation had been virtually off the radar in terms of buzz until the past few days. Project, helmed by Fred Savage, centers on a couple who take in a distraught friend after a divorce.

“Playboy,” written by Chad Hodge for Imagine TV, is a period piece set in the Chicago Playboy club in the early 1960s. “Awake” (formerly known as “REM”) is a time-bending vehicle about a detective who lives parallel lives after a car accident. It was penned by “Lone Star” scribe Kyle Killen and has drama vet Howard Gordon onboard as showrunner. “Grimm,” penned by David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf, is a police drama set in a world inhabited by Grimm’s fairy tale characters. The pickup adds more primetime heat to Sean Hayes and Todd Milliner’s Hazy Mills Prods., which is also home to TV Land’s “Hot in Cleveland.”

NBC also handed out renewals that had been expected to UMS’ “Parenthood” and Warner Bros. TV’s “Harry’s Law.”
