Cop series brings together U.K.-Gallic pubcasters

CANNES — Ben Miller (“Primeval”) will play opposite Gaul’s Sara Martins (“Tell No One”) in the previously announced Anglo-French co-production, “Death in Paradise” (Daily Variety, Dec. 9).

The eight-part cop drama is an unusual collaboration between Red Planet Pictures and Atlantique Prods. in association with BBC Worldwide and Kudos for BBC1 and pubcaster France Televisions. Show is written by new-to-TV screenwriter Robert Thorogood.

BBC Worldwide, which will distribute the series, described “Death in Paradise” as a fish-out-of-water story about a quintessential English cop (Miller), posted to the Caribbean island of Sainte Marie, who hates the sun and the laid-back lifestyle.

The deal for the project was brokered by BBC Worldwide, which secured the co-production agreement with France Televisions.

The series will be co-developed with both broadcasters for audiences in the U.K. and France.

It is the first time France Televisions has co-produced a drama series with the BBC.

Worldwide emphasised the collaborative nature of the initiative, which it said involved the script, production and casting.

Filming is set to begin in Guadeloupe, a French overseas department, with post production in London.
