Lachlan Murdoch takes reins of Ten

Scion was already an investor in Australia's No. 3 TV net

SYDNEY – Ten Network announced on Wednesday it had sacked its chief executive officer Grant Blackley, effective immediately, and handed the reins of Oz’s third ranked web to Lachlan Murdoch.

Chairman Brian Long also announced an immediate review of the company’s strategic operations.

Murdoch joined the board of Ten in December after he and friend and billionaire James Packer bought 18 per cent of the TV group. It is thought that the pair was not happy with the web’s strategy and favored a more cost-effective approach. Ten has rolled out two new channels, a sports-based one and a jv with the Eye web called 11. It has also made an expensive play to win TV news eyeballs with an expanded news hour, a costly move that has not earned it a bigger aud.

The review will give Murdoch the chance to take control of the web and guide in a new direction.
