Japan’s TV Asahi into China

Network forges deal with Shanghai Media Group

Tokyo — TV Asahi, one of Japan’s five terrestrial broadcasters, aims to start production in China.

In a press conference on Tuesday, network prexy Hiroshi Hayakawa said that it will send staffers to Shanghai Media Group by the end of the year as part of an exchange program.

SMG employees have been coming to TV Asahi in recent months for training in Japan.

The TV Asahi staffers will survey the Chinese market as a preliminary for starting local production and broadcasting in partnership with SMG.

In addition to conventional broadcasting, TV Asahi aims to link with SMG to bow Internet streaming services.

Facing stagnation in their core biz at home, Japanese media companies are trying to expand into other markets, with China a prime target.
