Charles Ferguson boards biopic of Julian Assange

Docu helmer Charles Ferguson is attached to direct HBO’s upcoming film based on WikiLeaks mastermind Julian Assange.

Ferguson, who earned the feature documentary Oscar this year for “Inside Job,” will examine the life of Assange. The Oz publisher and journalist set off a firestorm late in 2010 when he orchestrated the release of thousands of sensitive U.S. government documents.

Pic, which is still in development, will be exec produced by Joshua Maurer, David Stern and Alixandre Witlin. Audrey Marrs will produce with Ferguson.

Assange has been a hot topic in Hollywood, with feature biopic projects afoot at DreamWorks and Universal.

“Inside Job” examined the causes of the Wall Street meltdown of 2008. That pic and “No End in Sight” are the only two films Ferguson has directed. The HBO telepic will be his first non-docu project.

Ferguson’s repped by UTA.
