MADRID — HBO and Canal Plus Spain have inked a multiyear agreement that guarantees the Spanish premium paybox exclusive programming rights to upcoming HBO TV skeins.
Deal also sees Canal Plus Spain nabbing rights to a selected number of HBO-produced movies.
Beyond Canal Plus’ premium pay TV service, HBO products will also be available via a new video-on-demand service the Prisa-controlled paybox is preparing to bow in Spain early this year.
Highlights of the HBO-Canal Plus deal include Sean Bean starrer epic fantasy skein “Game of Thrones,” based on a series of novels from George R.R. Martin, which the Spanish feevee aims to launch this spring.
Canal Plus will also broadcast HBO’s five seg miniseries “Mildred Pierce,” starring Kate Winslet and Guy Pearce. Helmed by Todd Haynes, “Pierce” is skedded to bow March Stateside.
The agreement encompasses David Milch’s gambling drama “Luck,” directed by Michael Mann and toplining Dustin Hoffman.
The new HBO-Canal Plus pact strengthens one of the Spanish paybox’s most significant TV fiction relationships.
Recent flagship HBO programming aired by Canal Plus includes Martin Scorsese-produced series “Boardwalk Empire,” which debuted Dec. 13 in Spain. Canal Plus will broadcast the second season during 2011.
Also this year, Spanish paybox will broadcast the fourth season of “True Blood” and the third of “Hung.”
