Drama inspired by Mike Tyson's early years in New Jersey

HBO is in the ring with “Da Brick.”

Pay cabler is said to have given the greenlight for a pilot loosely inspired by Mike Tyson’s early years. John Ridley penned the script for Doug Ellin’s HBO-based production banner. Spike Lee is on board to direct and exec produce with Tyson, Ridley and Ellin and Ellin’s producing partner, Jim Lefkowitz.

The project came about after Tyson did a guest shot last year on Ellin’s “Entourage” (Daily Variety, June 22).

“He said to me, ‘Why don’t you do with my life what you did with Mark (Wahlberg’s) life” with “Entourage,” Ellin told Variety in June.

Tyson’s wife, Lakiha Tyson, will co-exec produce along with Azim Spicer.

HBO declined comment late Tuesday.
