500 women participated construction project last year

The Entertainment Industries Council is teaming with Habitat for Humanity and sponsoring this weekend’s Women’s Empowerment Build. This will mark the second year in a row that the EIC has sponsored the WE Build with Habitat’s San Fernando/Santa Clarita Valley affiliate.

The Women’s Empowerment Build encourages women to branch out into career fields that have been perceived to be male dominated, like science and technical fields. “We wanted to do more than just have a day where women build,” says Habitat for Humanity’s Donna Deutchman. “The women coming to this event are at the tops of their professions and want to encourage others by their example, and by sharing their success.”

At last year’s build, over 500 women participated in a construction project in Pacoima, CA, saving Habitat almost $100,000 in labor costs. This year’s Pacoima build on Saturday and Sunday, May 14 and 15, is chaired by thesp T’Keyah Crystal Keyman and will include building teams from “Days of Our Lives” and “Bold & the Beautiful.”

“We felt like much of what EIC does is awareness-oriented,” says Larry Deutchman, EIC’s exec vp of marketing and industry relations. “This build is an opportunity to do something that isn’t just awareness-oriented, but service-oriented as well.” Deutchman expects the sponsorship between the EIC and Habitat for Humanity to continue in the coming years.
