DirecTV takes ‘Slap’ in U.S.

Paybox DirecTV nabs Australian drama

Provocative Australian drama “The Slap,” based on Christos Tsiolkas’ bestseller, is to bow in the U.S. and Canada after DCD Rights sold the eight-parter to paybox DirecTV.

It will air on the Audience Network channel Stateside and on Ontario-based pubcaster TVO.

“The Slap” follows the fall-out from a dispute at a family barbecue when a man hits a child who is not his son. It stars Sophie Okonedo, Melissa George, Essie Davis and Jonathan LaPaglia.

Show was produced by Matchbox Pictures, majority owned by NBCU, for Oz pubcaster ABC Television. It bowed on ABC1 last month and in the U.K. on BBC4 where it has won an average audience of 830,500 (4% share), three times the slot average.

“The Slap” bowed internationally at last month’s Mipcom sales mart in Cannes. Show previously sold to Spain, Portugal, the Far East, Eastern Europe, Greece and Turkey.
