'Dates' inspired by Argentine telenovela
CBS TV Studios has sold to the CW a one-hour dramedy script adapted from an Argentine telenovela.
“Blind Dates” (Ciega a Citas) comes from former “Grey’s Anatomy” executive producer Krista Vernoff, who will write and exec produce with Raul Mateu of Fluent Media and Dori Media, the Israeli production company that produces the original.
The changed format adaptation balances family drama and a larger legal franchise, whereby our likable yet awkward heroine must find love (and a date) in anticipation of her older and more beautiful sister’s wedding. All the while she’s handling cases as a mediator.
Ciega a Citas won the Rose d’Or for best soap or telenovela in 2010, the same year it was nominated for best telenovela at the International Emmy Awards.
Telenovelas from overseas have been an enduring source of series ideas in recent years, though not in the quantity commanded back when ABC scored with “Ugly Betty,” which was adapted from Colombian soap “Yo Soy Betty La Fea” in 2006.
Vernoff, who was also executive producer last year on the ABC pilot “Grace,” is repped by CAA and Jamie Mandelbaum of Jackoway Tyerman Wertheimer Austen Mandelbaum Morris & Klein.
