Viacom 18 to bow channel by end of year
LONDON — Viacom 18, a joint venture between Viacom and India’s Network 18 group, announced Tuesday plans to launch Comedy Central in India by the end of the year.
However, Viacom 18 has postponed plans to launch a Bollywood movie channel until 2012. The company has spent some $51 million acquiring film rights.
Chief exec Haresh Chawla said, “We’re a young organization and therefore have the agility to tweak our plans as required.”
There are also plans for another channel aimed at young audiences and a shift in focus to Indian-language channels.
Viacom 18 operates several channels in India including MTV, VH1, Nick, Colors, CNN-IBN and CNBC TV18.
