The Canadians have made a handful of purchases at the L.A. Screenings, the annual shopping bazaar where foreign buyers come to town and purchase the new series just announced at the upfronts by the U.S. networks a week before.Ratings leader CTV, which had the fewest slots to fill, picked up dramas “Pan Am” and “G.C.B.” (formerly known as “Good Christian Belles”) as well as laffer “Whitney.” Net enters the new season with a strong lineup that includes “Grey’s Anatomy,” “The Mentalist” and “The Big Bang Theory.” On the reality side, CTV is the home to powerhouses “Dancing With the Stars” and “American Idol.” Now, to the dismay of its competitors, CTV added “The X-Factor.” Fox believes the show can be one of the fall season’s breakout hits. Rogers, which owns CityTV, was No. 3 behind Global and made a big push at the Screenings. It was the biggest buyer of Warner Bros. shows and also acquired a handful of titles from Twentieth. In addition to product from those studios, Rogers picked up “Revenge” and “Scandal” from Disney. Though the nets were very close-lipped about which shows they acquired, the top shows from Twentieth include “Terra Nova,” “The Playboy Club” and Tim Allen comedy “Last Man Standing.” Warners’ most-buzzed about series include “Alcatraz,” “Person of Interest” and laffer “2 Broke Girls.”Rogers is clearly making a big push to rise above second-place Global. Net lost “The Whole Truth,” “Chase” and “Undercovers” due to cancellations by their respective American networks. Top shows currently on Rogers’ slate include “Modern Family” and “Fringe.” According to insiders, Global wasn’t able to gain much traction at the Screenings. While it does have a handful of hit shows already positioned in its lineup — including “Survivor,” “House” and “Glee” — the net needs to replace “The Chicago Code” and “Brothers and Sisters.” In the past, Global was often aligned with Twentieth programming but that seems to have changed for the time being.
