BBC America has signed a development deal with independent British producer Clerkenwell Films, which produced BAFTA award-winning drama series “Misfits.”
Over an 18-month period, Clerkenwell will work on new skeins as well as possibly becoming a production partner on previously ordered programs for the cabler, which has been aiming to expand its original scripted offerings.
“Moving into original production is a big step for BBC America and one that we hope can bring interesting new opportunities for U.K. indies,” BBC America g.m. Perry Simon said. “To stand out in this hugely competitive market, we need access to the most creative talents and original shows in the world. We’re … excited to work with the guys at Clerkenwell.”
“Misfits,” a youth-skewing sci-fi drama, premiered in the U.K. in 2009 and won a 2010 BAFTA drama series honor before becoming a popular pick in the U.S. via Hulu.
