ABC renews ‘Modern Family,’ ‘Grey’s’

Network gives early season pickups to primetime hits

ABC has given early pickups to six of its primetime staples, including no-brainers like “Modern Family” and “Grey’s Anatomy.”

Not on the renewal list, however: “Desperate Housewives.” ABC hasn’t yet sealed new deals with the show’s cast, although series creator Marc Cherry is already on board for two more years.

Other shows receiving pickups for next year include sitcoms “The Middle” and “Cougar Town” – the last of which is probably the biggest surprise among the renewals, as a third season was not guaranteed. Also back for another year: “Private Practice” and “Castle.” No new series has yet been given a renewal for next year.

Also still on the bubble: “Brothers and Sisters.”
