Net extends order for freshman series

ABC Family has extended its order for freshman series “Switched at Birth” from 10 to 32 episodes, with the back order of 22 to premiere in early 2012.

The audience for “Switched” has grown over time, with its July 25 episode reaching series highs among viewers 12-34. The drama, which finishes its first 10 episodes next Monday, is ABC Family’s No. 2 freshman program ever in total viewers and top demos, behind “The Secret Life of the American Teenager.”

“Everything about this groundbreaking show speaks to our millennial viewers,” ABC Family EVP of original programming and development Kate Juergens said. “It has heart, humor (and) drama and an incredible cast that has brought beautifully nuanced performances to every role.”

Lizzy Weiss, Paul Stupin and John Ziffren exec produce “Switched,” which stars Katie Leclerc, Vanessa Marano, Constance Marie, D.W. Moffett, Lea Thompson, Lucas Grabeel and Sean Berdy as Emmett.
