Eye picks up drama 'Person of Interest,' laffer 'Girls' with more to come
CBS got the ball rolling on its series pickups Friday, greenlighting comedy “Two Broke Girls” and drama “Persons of Interest.”
And on Sunday, the Eye gave the ax to three frosh shows: laffers “Bleep My Dad Says” and “Mad Love” and drama “The Defenders.”
With J.J. Abrams on board as executive producer and a script by Jonathan Nolan (“The Dark Knight”), “Interest” was always considered a hot property. It stars Jim Caviezel as a CIA agent presumed dead who teams up to fight crime with a billionaire, played by “Lost” alum Michael Emerson. CBS presents its 2011-12 season sked to advertisers on Wednesday.
“Girls” stars Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs as women trying to make their dreams come true in Brooklyn despite limited means. The pickup is the second project to which Whitney Cummings is attached. Cummings, who co-wrote “Girlswith Michael Patrick King, is also the creator and star of the new NBC comedy “Whitney.”
King also had an hourlong project in contention at NBC, the Don Johnson starrer “A. Mann’s World.” Once it became clear that the Peacock was not moving forward with “Mann’s,” the chances of “Broke Girls” getting a pickup at CBS increased substantially as King will now be able to devote most of his energies to that show.
Both “Interest” and “Girls” come from Warner Bros. Television.
The other contenders for pickups at CBS are dramas “The Rememberer,” starring Poppy Montgomery; cop ensembler “Rookies”; Minnie Driver starrer “Hail Mary”; and the medical drama from scribe Susannah Grant.
On the comedy side, there’s still good buzz about David Hornsby’s “How to Be a Gentleman” as well as the untitled laffer from scribe Peter Knight.
Separately, the CBS drama pilot “Ringer,” starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, is on its way to the Eye’s sibling CW network. The project is viewed as a good fit for C-Dub — featuring Gellar playing two roles as a woman on the run who hides out as her twin sister — and of course Gellar is no stranger to the CW demo from her “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” years. CW unveils its new lineup to ad buyers on Thursday.
