Slated to be chief marketing officer
Christina Kounelias starts today as chief marketing officer for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences.
In the newly created position, the longtime New Line marketing exec will oversee marketing for the Oscarcast, as well as for the Governors Awards and year-round educational outreach and screening programs. The Acad’s marketing, communications and online staff will report to her.
Kounelias spent 17 years at New Line, where she served as exec VP of marketing, working on campaigns for films including the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. Before New Line, the veteran exec established the PR department for Miramax.
“As the Academy expands and fosters the achievements of the film community and its legacy, we are proud to have an executive of Christina’s caliber join us in this vital role,” said Academy CEO Dawn Hudson. “Christina brings a wealth of experience and a strategic perspective from working within the film community, which makes her the right person at the right time to lead our marketing initiatives and build upon the Academy’s ongoing achievements.”
Kounelias has been a member of the Academy for nine years.
On Tuesday, the Academy will vote for president, with Tom Sherak likely to win his third and final term, as well as for the recipients of the Governors Awards.
