Lythgoe grabs ‘Secret Fortune’

'Idol' exec producer teams with Wild Rover on quiz show

“American Idol” exec producer Nigel Lythgoe is teaming up with Wild Rover Prods. to co-produce the U.S. version of new quizshow “Secret Fortune.”

Format, created by Northern Ireland-based Wild Rover, has pairs of competing contestants answering questions contained in 23 envelopes. The final envelope contains the prize.

The pact was brokered by Kary McHoul, U.S. prexy of the show’s international distributor DRG.

It’s Wild Rover’s second major deal in the U.S., following the recently announced gameshow “Take the Money and Run,” which is being produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and Bertram Van Munster, and is due to premiere on ABC on April 14.

The “Secret Fortune” format, which preems in the U.K. on Saturday in primetime on BBC1, is the first to emerge from DRG’s strategy to co-fund format pilots with broadcasters.

Andrea Jackson, DRG’s managing director of acquisitions, said, “This enables us to take the highest quality example of the format to our international partners, and immediately begin building the show into a global brand, a significant revenue stream for our producer partners.”

DRG has licensed the format to producers across Europe, including Italy, Spain and Holland.
