Nickelodeon’s annual Kids’ Choice Awards lost little in its location translation from UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion in recent years to USC’s Galen Center on Saturday, at least in the gallons of slime that poured on celebrities from Jim Carrey to Heidi Klum.
So much ooze oozed that at least two show techs took onstage spills. Russell Brand, presenting an award alongside Rico Rodriguez of “Modern Family,” found himself under a constant green-goo assault despite his protests.
“I am English!” Brand shouted. “I am your leader! You must not do this — I am royal!”
Jack Black hosted the KCAs with his usual brand of powerhouse joy, while the most prestigous award of the night went to actor Josh Duhamel, who outpolled Kevin James and Kaley Cuoco for best arm fart.
During one commercial break, two cables lowered from the ceiling behind the floor seats, clearly preparing to launch a mystery talent Peter Pan-style across Galen to the stage. The passenger turned out to be 10-year-old Willow Smith, who flew over the head of her father, Will, and brother Jaden in the front row for her performance of “21st Century Girl” and “Whip My Hair.”
