'Do dooni chaar' will open event in New York on May 4

Disney’s Bollywood production “Do dooni chaar” will kick off the New York Indian Film Festival on May 4 at Paris Theater.

Pic, helmed by Habib Faisal and starring yesteryear stars Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh, is the first of Disney’s Hindi productions. All three will attend the opening night gala, which will be followed by an benefit dinner at Jumeirah Essex House.

” ‘Do dooni chaar’ … reflects the realities of a middle-class family in modern-day Delhi,” said fest director Aseem Chhabra. “It is a great example of India’s new emerging cinema that has an indie soul, but working within the framework of Bollywood.”

Fest closes May 8 with the screening of the adaptation of Rabindranath Tagore’s “Noukadubi,” by Rituparno Ghosh (“Chokher bali”) at Asia Society. The evening will include a tribute to Tagore, the Nobel laureate who was born 150 years ago in India.

Both pics are making their North American bow as will Aparna Sen’s Bengali-language “Iti Mrinalini,” which will unspool as a centerpiece screening May 6 at Tribeca Cinemas.

Opening night tix go on sale March 20 while those for other screenings and events start April 10. Go to iaac.us for more information.
