Kitano, Reichardt, Philibert play 4 +1

Mapfre Foundation teams with San Sebastian on showcase

San Sebastian– Takeshi Kitano’s “Outrage,” Kelly Reichardt’s “Meek’s Cutoff” and Nicolas Philibert’s “Nenette” feature in a 14-pic Competition lineup at the

2nd Mapfre Foundation 4 + 1 Festival.

Running Oct. 26-30, fest has also named Japan’s Naomi Kawase as its guest of honor.

A yakuza bloodbath, “Outrage” competed at Cannes; “Cutoff,” a U.S. critical hit, played Venice 2010 Competition. A portrait of a Paris Zoo orangutan, “Nenette,” is helmed by renowned French documaker Nicolas Philibert (“To Be and To Have”).

“Chantrapas,” from Georgia’s Otar Iosseliani, also plays Competition.

But further contenders include the far less-known “Color perro que huye,” a fragmentary diary loosely inspired by Hieronymus Bosch, helmed by Venezuela’s Andres Duque, “Tilva Rosh,” a coming-of-age tale from Serbian first-timer Nikola Lezaic, and Romanian Marian Crisan’s debut feature “Morgen,” a Locarno 2010 jury prizewinner and distinctive immigration tale.

Kawasi will deliver a master-class in Mexico City, 4 + 1’s 2011 fest center.

4 + 1 unspools simultaneously in Bogota, Buenos Aires, Mexico City, Madrid and Rio de Janeiro. None of the Competition players have snagged commercial distribution in these cities, Pablo Jimenez Burillo, Mapfre Foundation Culture Institute director general, said at San Sebastian.

“The films have a second opportunity in 4 +1,” he explained.

Competition titles will also be offered online on Mubi.com during the Festival.

Spain’s Mapfre, Latin America’s biggest pan-regional insurance company, is also partnering with the San Sebastian Festival on a kids’ film workshop, held during the fest, and a well-chosen San Sebastian 4 + 1 Contemporary Mexican Film showcase.

Latter’s titles range again from the better-known – Carlos Reygadas’ “Silent Light” and Fernando Eimbke’s “Lake Tahoe” – to the little-known, such as Tatiana Huezo’s Salvadoran village-set docu-feature “The Tiniest Place,” which received rave reviews at Guadalajara Festival.

Both San Sebastian and 4 + 1 publicize titles which suffer limited distribution and are clearly committed to Latin American cinema, said San Sebastian director Jose Luis Rebordinos, explaining the collaboration.

“Our idea is for the 4 + 1 Festival’s host country every year to have a showcase at San Sebastian,”Jimenez Burillo said.
