BBC Worldwide has pacted with Italy’s Mediaset to launch its first fully localized, dubbed bespoke channel in Western Europe.
The Italo version of BBC Knowledge will bow on paybox Mediaset Premium on March 1.
It is unusual for BBC Worldwide to launch new webs in a mature market like Italy. But Ian McDonough, senior VP and general manager of BBC Worldwide Channels, EMEA, said the country’s pay TV market was growing rapidly and indicated that similar bows were in the pipeline.
The factual entertainment web will broadcast 600 hours of programming per year, with an additional 100 hours dedicated to video-on-demand. Science web Discovery World will also bow on Mediaset Premium on March 1.
