Helmer Susanne Bier was hopeful that Denmark’s entry “In a Better World” would travel well with Oscar’s foreign-lingo pic voters because drama revolving around two Danish families turns on universal themes.

“It has done extremely well with Scandanavian reviewers and audience,” she said. “You never really know if it travels, but in this case I think it has a carryover factor because it speaks (to) relevant times.”
