“Gasland” helmer Josh Fox hopes the Oscar docu nom will bring awareness not only to his pic but to the issue of dangerous hydraulic drilling practices for natural gas in America’s heartland.
The threat of contamination is a major concern, Fox said.
“You have to gain some national consciousness on the issue but the other thing is you have to work very specifically with all the regions that are affected,” Fox said. “We have a campaign going on in 34 states. We’ve been working with the grassroots movement and lobbying Congress. I’m very happy to have this moment of renewed attention.”
Fox learned the news of “Gasland’s” nom while “pacing outside my brother’s apartment in Los Angeles,” he said. “My producer called and she was sobbing so much I couldn’t understand what she was saying. I think she was still crying two hours later.”
