Way ahead of the 8-Ball

Johnson, Mourning host pool tournament

Earvin “Magic” Johnson and Alonzo Mourning hosted the 6th annual Zo & Magic’s 8-Ball Challenge, held at the JW Marriott in downtown L.A. on Thursday.

Tichina Arnold emceed the round-robin style celebrity billiards pool tournament as DJ Biz Markie worked the turntables. Hill Harper, Larenz Tate, Lamman Rucker, Gabrielle Union, Arsenio Hall, Shaun Robinson and Rodney and Holly Robinson Peete danced and schmoozed as others competed for trophies including Chris Paul of the New Orleans Hornet, Paul Pierce of the Boston Celtics and basketball legend Julius “Dr. J” Erving.

Over the years, the event have raised more than $1 million for the Magic Johnson Foundation and Alonzo Mourning Charities, which award college scholarships.

Johnson was especially psyched by this year’s turnout. “We’re expecting to give scholarships to 22 high school students for college,” he noted.
