Universal tunes up CityWalk

Cee Lo Green one of first to perform at new 5 Towers venue

Gnarls Barkley headliner and “The Voice” judge Cee Lo Green will be one of the first acts to take the stage of Universal CityWalk’s new 5 Towers concert venue, which launches a summer music series Friday.

U decided to build the outdoor stage as a permanent fixture, next to CityWalk’s AMC Theaters, after concerts proved a popular draw on a smaller makeshift stage during the summer season over the past decade.

The 31- by 24-foot stage features five 42-foot LED light-tower sculptures, a 26-foot monitor mounted above the stage and HD cameras. Motion capture technology will enable guests to see their silhouettes projected onto the stage’s back wall. Guests will also be able to manipulate the towers’ lights through underground weight sensors.

As part of the launch, U will host a free “Plugged In” concert series each weekend through Aug. 28. Green will perform Thursday at 8 p.m.

Friday nights will feature local L.A. bands curated by 98.7 FM’s new Close to Home music showcase. A lineup of diverse acts will perform Saturdays, including Chasing Avalanche and Alien Ant Farm; Carolina Liar; Evolove and Dilana; and NBC’s “The Sing Off” finalists the Backbeats, Ernie Halter and Thomas Nicholas Band. Meanwhile, Sunday will be programmed by Descarga en CityWalk con Telemundo y mun2 (Jam on CityWalk with Telemundo and mun2).
