Veteran hip-hop producer to serve as exec vp of A&R
Top hip-hop producer No I.D. has been named exec VP of A&R at Def Jam Recordings.
The Universal Music Group unit has also signed an exclusive deal for the producer’s Atrium Recordings.
No I.D. (born Dion Wilson) is charged with overseeing current and new artist projects for Def Jam and developing and signing new talent to his label. He will also produce acts on the label’s roster.
He will report directly to Barry Weiss, chairman-CEO of Universal Republic and Island Def Jam Motown, and Karen Kwak, the newly elevated exec VP-head of A&R of Island Def Jam Music Group (Daily Variety, Aug. 23).
The Chicago-born producer has worked on such recent high-profile rap ventures as Jay-Z’s “The Blueprint 3” and Kanye West’s “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.” He has also worked with stars such as Rihanna, Rick Ross, Drake, Method Man, Nas and Common. He produced Common’s breakthrough work and mentored West early in his career.
