Gay & Lesbian Alliance to award duo

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation will honor Kristin Chenoweth and Ricky Martin at the upcoming GLAAD Media Awards.

Martin will receive the Vito Russo Award at the New York ceremony March 19 while Chenoweth will get the Vanguard Award April 10 in Los Angeles.

The Vito Russo Award, named after one of GLAAD’s founders, goes to Martin for being an openly LGBT professional in the media and promoting equal rights for the LGBT community. Martin is a nominee for outstanding talk show episode for his appearance on “Oprah.”

“Ricky coming out was a game-changer for many gay and transgender Latino children, who for too long did not have many out gay people to look up to,” said GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios.

Chenoweth receives the Vanguard Award for raising awareness of the LGBT community in the media.

Andy Cohen, exec VP of original programming for Bravo, will host the New York awards.
