David Geffen will be honored at this year’s pre-Grammys “Salute to Industry Icons,” to be presented jointly by Sony Music chief creative officer Clive Davis and the Recording Academy on Feb. 12 at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

Geffen will receive the Academy’s President’s Merit Award for his contributions to the music industry. Previous recipients include Mo Ostin, Doug Morris, Berry Gordy, Ahmet Ertegun, Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss and Davis himself.

A top agent at William Morris in the ’60s, Geffen went on to found Asylum Records and Geffen Records, which he sold to MCA in 1990. He co-founded the DreamWorks label and studio with Steven Spielberg and Jeffrey Katzenberg. Geffen retired from the entertainment business in 2009.
